Frequently Asked Questions
What is Stump Grinding?
Stump Grinding is the most cost-effective means of stump removal possible without waiting decades for nature to take its course. It involves using a powerful machine with a business end (see picture below) that looks something like a saw blade on steroids. The round extensions off the perimeter of the cutting wheel are the teeth that do the actual cutting. The cutting wheel is mounted to the machine on a boom that is moved left to right and up and down by hydraulic controls. This enables the operator to grind the stump into a pile of manageable woodchips quickly.
What are my options for stump removal?
Natural Decomposition: Mother nature is free, but she works very slowly. Depending on the size and wood species, the stump will rot away in 7 to 1,000 years. The average pine stump takes about a decade.
Chemical Decomposition
Some chemical treatments can speed up decay, but it still takes years for that to work.
Stump Grinding
This is by far the most economical means of speedy stump removal. It takes a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the stump. Your stumps can be ground to mulch almost immediately.
Excavation
This is the most expensive means of stump removal, and we do not offer this service. It involves a large machine known as a track hoe or excavator to dig out the entire stump and root…
Most people find that stump grinding is cheaper than they expected. Call us at 585-Stump-Be, and we will come out and give you a free, no-obligation quote on your job. Since stumps come in many shapes and sizes, it isn’t possible to publish a price scale that is fair to both the customer and the service provider. Also, when we quote a job, that is a final price to which there are no hidden additional fees or upcharges. For example, if we tell you the job is $150, that is what the final price will be, nothing more unless something else was agreed to before the work was done.
What will the location look like after a stump is ground?
You will be left with a pile of mulch about two to three times the size of the unground stump. Unless agreed otherwise, the shavings will be raked into a hill, and any surrounding artificial surfaces will be swept free of debris. We do not haul away stump shavings, but if you need this service, I can undoubtedly recommend reputable people who can provide that service for you.
I’ve just had a tree cut down. Why should I grind the stump away?
There are many reasons to remove a tree stump – aesthetics; you don’t want to mow around it constantly, you want to avoid termites and ants near your house, you want to plant a new tree, you don’t want the stump sprouting into a new tree…
Can your machine fit through our gate?
Our machine was specially designed to fit through a 36-inch gate – that’s a standard-sized gate or opening so we can probably get through your gate without any problems
Do you call dig safe to have utilities located?
YES!!! It is a Federal Mandate to call Dig Safe (811). It is illegal to dig without calling Dig Safe (811), and homeowners and contractors will be found liable for the damage. Some fiber optic lines can cost upwards of 100K! Dig Safe generally takes three days to mark the utilities, and we take care of this for the homeowner. Every contractor must pull their dig safe ticket even if utilities were recently marked from a different project.
Do you carry insurance?
ABSOLUTELY! We carry insurance to protect ourselves and our homeowners. We believe in doing things one way – the right way
